Now is the perfect time of year for a little adventure. The August and September months have that transitional period where the summer heat cools down in preparation for the fall weather; perfect for enjoying both a good swim in the river and a cool mountain breeze at sunset. Well, If you’re in Virginia that is.
So while you’re preparing for your next camping trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains, here are a few camping essentials for all you meat-lovers out there:
If you’re looking for a quick and easy bite to eat during your adventures, you’ve come to the right place with our Cooked Virginia Ham Slices. Like all of our cured products, our salt-cured hams, bacon and sausage can stay without refrigeration for up to 10 days. That means you can just throw a pack of cooked ham slices into your bag and save it for later for a nice ham sandwich.
Uncooked Virginia Country Ham Slices (Ham Steak)
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so you need to take full advantage of it before your hike to Old Rag or go white water rafting near Natural Bridge. Simply light up the campfire, grab a frying pan and put one ham steak over the hot fire for about 8 minutes ( about 4 minutes on one side and 4 minutes on the other) Pour a little water to the pan to add moisture. Add a little brown sugar to give your breakfast that extra flavor. Ham steaks are great because they aren’t too greasy, giving you an easy clean up when you’re on-the-go.
If you’re on a trip into the wild for the long haul, grab an entire Bone-In Uncooked Virginia Ham. Slice steaks right off the bone for any meal, fry them up, and the reserve fat in the pan can be used for cooking other items (and maybe a little red-eye gravy). It worked for Revolutionary War soldiers, so why not modern day campers? This one has a 12 week shelf life without refrigeration. Just need to hang it high in the trees with all the other food because even bears like country ham!
Our head of sales, Keith, discovered this idea at Camp Bacon - take a Half Slab and cut off 2 inch cubes, put it on a stick, and cook over the open flame like you would a marshmallow. Slap it on a piece of bread with some cheese or spread of some sort and you have a “Bacon S’more” J.
Be sure to share your Bacon S’more’s the next time your camping out at one of Virginia’s great Bluegrass Festivals.
Our award winning bacon steak is a mouthful of bacon and superior flavor. Throw several of these quarter-inch thick bacon slices on a campfire grill for about 3-5 minutes (look for that dark, mahogany color on the bacon), and fold 3 or four slices on sandwich bread for a bacon-filled feast. Like most of our products, our bacon steak has a 10 day shelf life without refrigeration.
Either the 12 oz retail pack, the 2 lb bag, or the 5 lb bag of Smoked Surry Sausage, it all depends on the length of the trip and how many people are going. All are cryovaced packed and have the 10 shelf life without refrigeration. Slice the sausage in half vertically without breaking the sausage casing and place it on your campfire grill for about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the heat of your flame. Flip accordingly while looking for that dark mahogany color. Once its done, you’ll have crisp, smokey flavor to your lunch or dinner.
